I help your pup feel safe, calm, and happy from the start — right at home — setting the stage for a lifetime of positive grooming experiences.

Frequently asked questions

Starting your puppy's grooming journey can bring up many questions and a few worries. I am here to provide clarity and peace of mind, ensuring your puppy's first experiences are as positive and stress-free as possible. Read on for answers to common questions.

What's special about a puppy's first groom compared to an older dog?

Unlike a full groom for an adult dog, a puppy's first session with Coleen the Groomer focuses purely on positive exposure. There's no full haircut involved. I aim to get them accustomed to the sights, sounds, and sensations of grooming  without the pressure of a complete style. It's all about building comfort and trust with the experience and sounds.

How do you make sure a puppy's first grooming experience is a happy and stress-free one, especially since you come to their home?

My in-home approach allows me to go at your puppy's pace by going slow. I let them inspect all the tools – brushes, clippers, dryers – before I even begin to use them. There's absolutely no forcing the process. I prioritize patience and positive reinforcement, making it a comfortable and even enjoyable introduction to grooming.

What are the biggest worries or questions new puppy owners usually have about their puppy's first groom, and how do you help put their minds at ease?

Many owners worry about their puppy being overwhelmed or scared. I reassure them that patience is key. A second appointment should be made for two weeks after the first groom to do a full groom, allowing the puppy to process the initial experience and be ready for more.

What can a puppy owner expect from their puppy's first grooming session with you, and what are the long-term benefits for their puppy?

Don't expect perfection in the first few sessions; it’s a learning curve for your puppy! It may take a few appointments for your puppy to find their groove. Everything done in the initial few appointments is designed to set your dog up for a successful lifetime of grooming. The long-term benefit is a well-adjusted dog who tolerates and even enjoys grooming.
